Candies with Peanuts: a guide to trick or treating with food allergies

Halloween is fast approaching! It’s the season of scary movies and corn mazes, and of course, it’s the sugar rush season. And with the candy avalanche, many parents worry about their child’s nut allergy. Trick-or-treating, however, does not have to be a scary thing for children with allergies. In fact, there are many ways to not let your child miss out on the fun of trick-or-treating but still be safe. 1. Find allergy-free Halloween events in your area by searching on Facebook. You'll be surprised at what you find! Food allergies are more common than many realize. 2. Do a family trick-or-treat instead of going out. Invite cousins or friends who are aware of the child's allergies. 3. Go with your child trick-or-treating to monitor what candy he/she receives. 4. Do a post trick-or-treat swap with peanut and egg free foods. 5. Bake other treats for that night, like spooky snacks. Maybe even encourage others to do the same!
